Enhancing Regional Field Epidemiology Training Program to Strengthen Workforce Capability to Prevent, Detect and Respond to Transboundary Emerging Infectious Diseases Project

Objective: 

To address the needs, gaps and recommendations for strengthening the field epidemiologist in supporting the Rapid Response Team (RRT) to be proposed to the ASEAN Health Cluster II meeting facilitated by the ASEAN Secretariat.

Activities:

  1. Conduct In-person consultative meetings (in-person meetings) with focal persons and development partners to identify common gaps for addressing the needs, gaps and recommendations for strengthening the field epidemiologist in supporting the Rapid Response Team (RRT). 

  2. Conduct the consultative meeting to develop and review the concept note to get concurrence in the ASEAN Plus 3 FETN Steering Committee 2024 for implementing the in-person workshop for identify common gaps for addressing the needs, gaps and recommendations for strengthening the field epidemiologist in supporting the Rapid Response Team (RRT).

Strengthening Field Epidemiology Mentorship in Southeast Asia Project

Objectives:

  1. To increase the number of competent field epidemiology mentors to improve the supervision of field epidemiology trainees thus improving their ability to respond to disease outbreaks rapidly and effectively throughout the ASEAN+3 region.
  2. To equip public health officers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to effectively implement the FETP Frontline One Health Training program in their respective ASEAN+3 member countries.
  3. To assess the effectiveness of efforts to strengthen field epidemiology mentorship in ASEAN+3 FETN countries, using a review of mentorship programs in the region.
  4. To build field epidemiology mentors’ capacity in the ASEAN+3 region.
  5. To develop guidance documents that train-mentors can use as a reference when designing their own FETP curricula.
  6. To develop the protocol of the “1st Mentorship Conference of ASEAN+3 FETN.

Activities:

  1. FETP Frontline One Health Training. Lead by ASEAN+3 FETN member country.
  2. Review of mentorship program in ASEAN+3 FETN countries.
  3. Recruit FETP graduates to train the 16th Batch of IFETP: Training of Trainer.
  4. Provide a suitable FETP standard reference curriculum.
  5. To develop the protocol of the “1st Mentorship Conference of ASEAN+3 FETN.

Data Science Capabilities for Field Epidemiologists to better prevent, detect, and Respond to the global pandemic Project: Data Modernization Initiative (DMI)

Objective:  To Improve international collaboration on data science among the field epidemiology workforce in this region.

Accomplishment (April 2022 to September 2023):  

  1.  Developed course curriculum on Regional Data Science for Field Epidemiology Mentor and mentee, completed on 2-3 April 2023.
  2.  Up-skill field epidemiology mentors in Data Science by conducting a 9-month course on Basic Data Science for Field Epidemiology Mentors. This course is scheduled on June 2023 to February 2024.
  3. Support participants from the 9-month course to attend the online course “R-program, Machine Learning and Python” for their self-training, June-July 2023.
  4. Conduct onsite training 1-week course for FETP mentors under the 9-month course. The course is scheduled for 21-25 August 2023.
  5. Work with mentors and mentees of the 9-month course in developing the proposal of Health Situation Analysis in data science, August-September 2023.

Strengthening Public Health Emergency Response, Data Science Capabilities, and Coordination Mechanisms for Field Epidemiologists in the ASEAN Plus 3 Field Epidemiology Training Network (FETN) to Better Prepare for, Detect, and Respond to Global Pandemics Project.

Objectives:

  1. Build capacity of field epidemiologists in public health emergency preparedness and response.
  2. Up-skill field epidemiologists and public health officers in data science to facilitate the translation and communication of data for evidence-based policy development.
  3. To strengthen the coordination mechanism of the ASEAN Plus 3 FETN Coordinating Office as strong coordination could enhance network efficiency and sustainability.

Activities:

  1. Conduct joint activities including table-top exercises, hand-on workshops, and joint field training (e.g., surveillance evaluation, risk assessment, outbreak investigation, etc.).
  2. Joint conduct with Health Informatics Organizations and IFETP Thailand, the 6-month Training Module and Hands-on experience in data science. Target participants are field epidemiologists (advance and intermediate levels).
  3. Develop report/manuscripts of health situation analysis using Python and other data science tools.
  4. A Series of VC will be administered to facilitate further dialogue and mechanisms for collaboration among the ASEAN Plus 3 Member Countries.
  5. Conduct the Annual ASEAN+3 FETN Steering Committee and related meetings.
  6. Share experiences, constraints, and achievements in organizing field epidemiology training programs across countries and disciplines among other ASEAN Coordinating Offices and ASEAN secretariat.
  7. Review and report the progress of collaboration as appropriate and contribute to preparations for an annual report.
